When to use the uppercase converter
Uppercase is the right choice in a narrower set of situations than most people assume:
- Constants and environment variables. Nearly every language style guide — PEP 8, the Google Java Style Guide, the Airbnb JavaScript guide — asks for
SCREAMING_SNAKE_CASEfor constants. - Short labels and acronyms. Buttons, table headers, and badge text read fine in caps because they are scanned, not read.
- Legal and contractual emphasis. Warranty disclaimers are conventionally set in caps because several US state statutes require terms to be "conspicuous."
Avoid uppercase for body copy. Research on typography consistently finds that all-caps text slows reading, because readers rely on the ascenders and descenders of lowercase letters to recognise word shapes. Caps also reads as shouting in email and chat.
One caveat: converting to uppercase is not always reversible. Once NASA and nasa both become NASA, no tool can recover the original. Keep a copy of the source text if that matters.
Frequently asked questions
Does the uppercase converter change numbers or punctuation?
No. Only alphabetic characters are affected. Digits, spaces, punctuation, emoji, and symbols pass through exactly as you typed them.
Does it work with accented and non-English characters?
Yes. The converter uses the browser's built-in Unicode case mapping, so á becomes Á, ß becomes SS, and Greek, Cyrillic, and other cased scripts convert correctly.
Is my text uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Nothing is transmitted, logged, or stored, and the tool keeps working if you go offline.
Is there a length limit?
There is no hard limit. Very large documents (several megabytes) may briefly freeze the tab while converting, since the work happens on your device.
