When to use the Subscript Generator

Subscripts exist in Unicode almost entirely to serve chemistry and mathematics. The digits are complete and universally supported, which is why H₂O, CO₂, and CH₄ paste correctly into any field — a chat message, a filename, a spreadsheet header.

The letters are a much thinner set. Only seventeen exist: a, e, h, i, j, k, l, m, n, o, p, r, s, t, u, v, and x. There is no subscript b, c, d, f, g, q, w, y, or z. This tool leaves the missing ones as ordinary letters rather than substituting an unrelated lookalike, which means a word like "subscript" comes out partly lowered and partly not.

For chemical formulas, that limitation does not matter — the digits are what you need, and they all work.
